Students are invited to train as 'Earth Systems Investigation Agents', in one day. They learn about living, non-living and once-living things, Earth systems, and their role in maintaining biodiversity.
Students will be able to:
- identify and describe living, non-living and once living things
- explore forest cycles and make connections between these and living, once living and non-living things
- undertake guided scientific research to investigate how living, once living and non-living things affect soil health and biodiversity
- propose actions to maintain or improve an ecosystem.
Overview of day
Students visit Bunyaville Conservation Park to train as 'Earth Systems Investigation Unit' agents, responsible for protecting the systems that support life on Earth and maintain biodiversity. Throughout the day, the elusive Agent Claw sets missions that build the knowledge and skills students need to protect Earth systems and biodiversity in their communities - their ultimate job as full agents. The missions:
Know your surroundings: Students undertake an earthwalk to identify living, non-living and once-living things, and find evidence of forest cycles and connections.
Connections: Students investigate forest connections and explore what happens to biodiversity when these connections fail or break down.
Forest Cycle Investigation: Students collaborate to recreate the forest cycle and learn how it supports biodiversity.
Biodiversity Investigation: Students investigate and compare biodiversity in the leaf litter of disturbed and forested areas.
The day culminates with students sharing how they can support biodiversity in their communities and discovering Agent Claw's identity.
