The Teaching of Sustainability and Environmental Education
We teach sustainability and environmental education through the Australian Curriculum, Senior Syllabuses and the Early Years Framework/Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines. All of our programs have an environmental and sustainable focus. The programs are linked to these curriculums and the UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals.
The Sustainability Goals we focus on in particular are:
4.7: Quality Education
6: Clean Water and Sanitation
12: Responsible Consumption and Production
13: Climate Action
14: Life Below Water
15: Life on Land
Environmental Education is taught through:
Knowledge and Skills
- e.g. water conservation, water cycle, erosion, needs of living things, external features, scientific inquiry, observations, critical thinking, problem solving
Connection
- e.g. creating a positive experience in nature, connecting to nature in different ways and at different levels, creating a sense of wonder and awe
Take Action
- e.g. by planting trees, educating others, writing letters, picking up rubbish, walking on tracks, caring for plants and animals, providing management solutions to urban areas
