Health & Safety and Risk Assessments

Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre (BEEC) is a Queensland Department of Education school and therefore satisfies all Department of Education requirements (as outlined within Policies and Procedures Register). All staff are trained in their specific roles and all Departmental guidelines are adhered to. Risk management is a high priority within Centre operations. Facilities are regularly checked and maintained and all equipment is used in accordance with manufacturers' guidelines. Curriculum Activity Risk Assessments have been completed for all BEEC conducted activities. See below table for more details.

​Planning:

  • We recommend you put this WHS message in to your permission note so parents are aware of the outdoor nature of where their children are attending.

​​Please be aware that the students will be participating in activities in an outdoor setting (in the bush) and therefore amongst plants, animals and the bush terrain. Safety instructions are given prior to each activity to help keep everyone safe as well as teaching students the value of caring for Country.  We are situated in the Bunyaville Conservation Park which is open to the public.


  • Supervision ratios are listed on the program overview and are to be adhered to.
  • Visiting adults and children are encouraged to use broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+ min), insect repellent, protective clothing including closed-in shoes and hats,​​ and to bring water bottles. 
  • Visiting teachers are to provide Bunyaville teachers with a full list of students and adults visiting the Centre/Bunyaville Conservation Park (BCP). Diverse/medical needs are requested so Bunyaville teachers can support students within the natural environment and the delivery of the program. Visiting teachers are responsible for administering any daily medication to students.


Duty of care:

  • Visiting adults, teachers and principals are under the directions of BEEC staff throughout the duration of the program. 'Duty of Care' of the students is a cooperative responsibility between BEEC staff and the visiting teachers.
  • Bunyaville's Student Code of Conduct is available on the website www.bunyavilleeec.eq.edu.au


First Aid:

  • All BEEC teachers carry a first-aid kit at all times when in the field and have First Aid and CPR certification. In addition, First Aid kits are on site at the Centre/excursion assembly area, including a defibrillator at the Centre building. Visiting teachers should bring their own First Aid kit and required medicines for transport to and from Centre/BCP.


Site Safety:

  • Safety instructions are provided to visitors where appropriate throughout the program. Centre teachers carry mobile phones when in the BCP.
  • Evacuation and lockdown procedures are provided in the previsit information and located on Centre buildings.
  • All students must be supervised by a teacher at all times.
  • All programs access the BCP at some point during the day. Please note that BCP is open to the general public.
    • Staff stay on tracks and tree assessed areas
    • Toilets in the picnic area are checked before the program starts and students are supervised, and go in groups to go to the toilets during the program.
    • Roads: caution required at all times on or near roadways. Students cross the road in groups with an adult.


Weather:

  • Weather conditions are monitored by staff throughout the program to prioritise the safety of all. Bunyaville staff will ring visiting teachers by 7am the day of the visit to discuss weather if required. Bunyaville staff are guided by standard operating procedures and policies.​
